Painswick Beacon or Kimsbury Hill Fort

Hill Fort

The aerial photo shows Painswick Beacon or Kimsbury Hill Fort, from the east. It is located above Painswick on the Cotwold edge overlooking the Severn valley (top of picture).

This strategically placed Iron Age hill fort probably flourished between 500 and 100 BC. The ramparts and ditches, and the eastern entrance, are well preserved but the interior has been much disturbed by quarrying in medieval and later times.
